Although tango lyrics emphasizes in loneliness, passion, desire, despair and jealousy, it has a very sensual dance, tango comes from the word "Tangere" (to touch), its representation includes flirting looks and sexual caresses.
Tango was invented about 100 years ago in the port areas of Buenos Aires, in the middle of brothels and bars, by these years, the dance was considered shameless. Its lyrics use the Lunfardo slang and express the feeling of the barrios of Buenos Aires, becoming immediately in a expression way of the working classes.
The elemental musical instruments in a tango orchestra include bandoneón, violin, piano, and double bass, guitars are used sometimes.
By 1920s, this music style, became popular in cities like London, Paris, Berlin and New York. Singers such as Carlos Gardel, Roberto Goyoneche, Hugo del Carril, Tita Merello, and Edmundo Rivero made of the tango a worldwide known music. By these years other classes of society in Argentina began to accept this kind of music.
Between 1930 and 1950, large Tango orchestral groups, like bands of Anibal Troilo, Francisco Canaro, Juan D'Arienzo and Osvaldo Pugliese became very popular.
By 1950s, a new style of tango was introduced: the "Tango Nuevo" movement, led by Astor Piazzolla, a composer and performer which added elements of jazz and modern art music, the Tango turned more listener-oriented, those changes created a serious discussion between new- and old- tango musicians.
